Mak finished up his third conference call of the day then sat back with a satisfied smile. He’d managed to sign two more important, high-profile corporate clients and the third seemed like a good bet as well. Things were going well for Guardian Alliance. Going well for him too, considering his unexpected chemistry with Freedom. Even if it was only temporary.

Inhaling deep, he sat forward again. Yes, they’d fucked. Yes, it had been amazing. But Mak wasn’t sure if that was because it had been so long for him or because there was a real connection there with Freedom. And if there was the potential of something more between them, Freedom had been crystal clear last night that all he wanted was sex. Which, honestly, was all that Mak should want too. He had more than enough on his plate to keep him busy right now, without the headache of a new relationship to worry about. Nothing about the fact that while the company was expected to top one million dollars in profit that year, Mak donated a large chunk of the money to charity. Or that he and the guys routinely volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and at the local children’s hospital. Because Freedom wasn’t about doing good or seeing good in others. His goal was to find his own version of the truth, no matter who got hurt along the way.

Freedom Investigates, my ass.

Pissed and feeling betrayed, Mak shut down his laptop then went outside to walk the perimeter of the grounds, something that always helped him blow off steam. He’d known he couldn’t trust Freedom and had done his best to keep the guy at arm’s length. He shouldn’t be surprised now to have been proven right. And yet, it still hurt. If Freedom felt differently now, why hadn’t he said something the night before?

Because he doesn’t feel differently. That’s the truth of it.

Mak stalked across the now empty training field and headed for the open desert terrain beyond, furious. This reminded him of living with his father. Every smile, every look, all the words out of the man’s goddamned mouth were lies. How could Freedom not
